Jennifer Anderson

Advisor

As an active investor and consultant in the early-stage biotechnology, human nutrition and medical devices sectors, Jennifer has worked with Crown Research Institutes, universities and the private sector in both technical and commercial roles to commercialise intellectual property into the international market. During her time with Industrial Research and Massey University Jennifer developed a passion for seeing science move from the lab-bench into financially-sound businesses.

Tia Hitchon

Executive Assistant & Corporate Development

Tia settled in New Zealand after a 10-year career in international investment banking and finance in London. Her management and organisational skills transferred well into the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority where she continued to provide strategic and operational advice to the Deputy Chief Executive of Communications. Her role extended to include detailed reporting and project management to a National Government level.

Anya Hornsey

Christchurch Regional General Manager

Anya has a background as a co-inventor in a corporate spin-out which developed a significant patent portfolio sold to a multi-national company. Anya’s key focus is developing IP strategies for the Powerhouse portfolio and conducting due diligence on potential investment opportunities, checking freedom-to-operate and the strength of any existing IP position. Anya is responsible for deploying Powerhouse Seed Funds into pre-revenue early stage ventures, including IP negotiation and investment deal processing.

Gerard Kilpatrick

Advisor

Gerard joined Powerhouse in May 2015 and brings with him more than 20 years of senior and executive level management experience from a broad range of industry sectors. 
Gerard's early career was strongly focused towards sales and marketing, initially, within the pharmaceutical sector here in New Zealand, and subsequently, in the consumer goods markets in the United Kingdom, where he worked for listed French multinational, Royal Canin. Following this, Gerard spent the next 10 years in the industrial textiles and apparel sector holding senior management and CEO roles with Alliance Textiles and Swanndri.
Prior to joining Powerhouse, Gerard had 3 years working within New Zealand's largest listed company, Fletcher Building, where he held a regional management role within Fletcher Distribution. 

 

Andy Matheson

Chief Investment Officer

Andy has held senior executive roles in energy, infrastructure and clean-tech companies. He has worked as CEO, MD and Board Director in start-up businesses through the pre-seed to exit stages over 10 years. Before this Andy held international marketing and business development roles targeting the global industrial and utilities sector for 10 years. Prior to joining Powerhouse, Andy worked at HRL Morrison & Co, manager of diversified listed company Infratil, which has a market capitalisation of NZD1.7B.

Tijs Robinson

Advisor

Tijs has extensive experience in commercialisation and market development of industrial technologies. Tijs joined Powerhouse from Kerasi, where he assisted Wellington-based clients with technology commercialisation. Prior to this he managed new product development and business growth in international markets at HTS-110 Ltd, a high-tech manufacturing company. Tijs has experience of managing a high-tech international manufacturing supply chain, and negotiating OEM supply agreements. Earlier in his career, Tijs worked at a Crown Research Institute where he was involved in business development, securing investment and market validation.

Steve Silvey

Dunedin Regional General Manager

Steve oversees the Dunedin operations of Powerhouse. Formerly CEO of Upstart Business Incubator in Dunedin, Steve has spent his career in commercialisation roles and creating shareholder value at general management and governance level. He has exposure at all stages of the business lifecycle, from start up to corporate including successful trade sales. Steve has an Honours degree in Biology, an MBA and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and the New Zealand Institute of Management.

Rachel Triplow

General Counsel
Company Secretary

Rachel’s experience includes more than 20 years in intellectual property and commercial law. Her roles have included: acting as the sole in-house counsel for the UK branch of an international company; providing specialised legal and strategic advice within leading IP firms in New Zealand and the UK; preparing legal opinions and policies at what is now the MBIE; and drafting legal decisions and practice guidelines as the Assistant Commissioner of Trade Marks at IPONZ.  Since joining Powerhouse in 2015, Rachel has played a key part in listing on the ASX and as Company Secretary is now responsible for supporting the Board on governance matters.

Matthew Turnbull

Corporate Accountant

Matthew is an accounting professional and brings to Powerhouse his skills in financial reporting and data analysis. Matthew qualified as a Chartered Accountant in Northern Ireland in 2012 and worked as an auditor for Grant Thornton in the UK and New Zealand for seven years before joining Powerhouse.

Paul Viney

Chief Executive Officer

Paul is a career finance and governance professional. He has worked in Australian industrial and financial services organisations for over 20 years and has specialised in financial and management accounting, value creation, mergers and acquisitions and corporate governance. Prior to joining Powerhouse, Paul was Chief Financial Officer / Company Secretary at diversified ASX listed banking group MyState Limited, which had a market capitalisation of over AUD400 million and an asset footprint of around AUD5.3 billion.

Stuart Whitham

Chief Financial Officer

Stuart brings to Powerhouse his international experience working with young growth companies on modelling, audits, valuation, fund management and financial control. Stuart qualified as a Chartered Accountant at Coopers & Lybrand (now PwC) in London, specialising in the valuation of derivatives with Credit Suisse First Boston, Commerzbank and the Royal Bank of Scotland. After making a permanent move to Christchurch in 2004, Stuart took up a role with a global fund of funds, before later becoming Financial Controller at TSE listed Allied Telesis.

Melissa Yiannoutsos

Advisor

Melissa has spent nearly 15 years commercialising science for industrial, medical and biotechnology applications in New Zealand. She has extensive experience of developing and implementing strategies for technology-led organisations and leading negotiations with international corporations. Prior to setting up Kerasi Limited, which merged with Powerhouse in 2014, Melissa was responsible for administering business incubator programmes, managing the commercialisation portfolio and pre-seed and equity funds at Industrial Research Limited. Melissa is an active investor in technology start-ups and has been on a number of boards.

Russell Yardley

Chairman
Non-executive Independent Director

Russell has been a professional Non-Executive Director and Chairman for the past decade following a career in the informational technology and communications sector. He is Chairman of ASX listed Tesserent Limited, on the boards of two WPP companies Wunderman and Bienalto, Chairman of the Australian Federal Government funded National eResearch Collaboration Resources and Tools project, a member of the Victorian Government Purchasing Board as well as being an honorary member of the board of the Alannah and Madeline Foundation. After spending more than 7 years at IBM he founded his first company Decision Engineers that was merged with ASI to form Applied Learning that was then listed on the ASX in 1993. Russell was the Victorian State Chair 2010-2011 and the National Treasurer 2011-2014 of the Australian Information Industry Association, was made an Honorary Member of the Australian Computer Society in 2010 and made a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors in 2012.

Rick Christie

Non-executive Independent Director

Rick is a professional Director and Chairman with extensive experience in the private and public sectors in New Zealand, Australia and elsewhere. He is Chairman of the New Zealand supercomputer network NeSI, ikeGPS Ltd and Service IQ and a director of Southport and Solnet Solutions. He also had extensive experience as a senior/ Chief Executive, including with BP Oil Limited, in Australia and the UK, Cable Price Downer - involved in the ANZAC Frigate Project - and the diversified New Zealand investment company Rangatira Ltd. He was Chief Executive of the NZ Trade Development Board, Chairman of the Crown Research Institute AgResearch, past Chairman of ASX and NZX listed Ebos Group Ltd.  He was a member of the Prime Minister’s Enterprise Council, Chairman of the Technological Innovation Working Group, the Science and Innovation Advisory Council and the Growth and Innovation Advisory Board. In 2010 he was made a Companion of the Royal Society of NZ.

Rick is a member of the Powerhouse Audit & Risk Committee and Corporate Governance & Nomination Committee.

John Hunter

Non-executive Independent Director

John has held various Directorship positions for 23 years on both private and NZX listed companies, together with board membership on educational and health sector institutions. John executive career encompassed extensive chief financial officer experience as well as chief operating officer and general manager positions in New Zealand and Australia. His expertise includes HR, IT and legal responsibilities. He has extensive experience across the manufacturing, finance, retail, wholesale, information technology and primary sectors. John has specialised in managing fast-growing, post-seed companies to sector dominance or national significance, whereafter he has often managed their listing on the NZSX.

John is Chairman of the Powerhouse Audit and Risk Committee and a member of the Human Resources and Remuneration Committee.

Dianne McCarthy

Non-executive Independent Director

Di is the former professor at the University of Auckland, with an extensive list of peer reviewed publications. She was then Chief Executive of the Royal Society of New Zealand and has over 20 years’ experience in various management and governance roles in the tertiary education, science and health sectors, including Pro Vice-Chancellor (Equity) and Council member at the University of Auckland, a Director of Agresearch, a Crown Research Institute,. She is currently a Member of the Victoria University of Wellington Council Nominations Panel and Member International Jury for L’Oreal for Women in Science Fellowships Melbourne. She is a Director of the Cawthron Institute and a member of the governance boards of the Dodd-Walls Centre for Photonic and Quantum Technologies University of Otago and two National Science Challenges - Ageing Well and Healthier Lives. She is a Trustee of the Malaghan Institute of Medical Research and the Deafness Research Foundation (NZ). She is a former member of the Board of Grow Wellington and a current trustee of Business Trust Marlborough. She is the Executive Director of DCM Solutions, a small consulting company for research in education, science and health. She was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to education, a Companion of the Royal Society of New Zealand for services to science.

Di is the Chairman of the Powerhouse Human Resources and Remuneration Committee and a member of the Portfolio Committee and the Corporate Governance and Nomination Committees.
